People who are released from incarceration face unique challenges to participating in society. Returning citizens have no job, little money, and no permanent place to live upon their release. They are sometimes barred from receiving public benefits or accessing public housing. Private landlords and employers may discriminate against them because of their criminal histories. And personal and family relationships may take work to repair.

Ms. B’s Kitchen and Catering in the North Lawndale neighborhood sells Chicago-style favorites like pizza puffs. On other days of the week, owner Tawanda Stange cooks comfort food, everything from pot roast to oxtails to gumbo. Her Sunday Soul Food menu includes baked chicken, smothered pork chops and candied yams.

Stange, who learned how to cook at her grandmother’s house, started the business in 2017. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, she had to let go of two employees.

 The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) and Building For Tomorrow’s ConnectHome Akron Initiative is bringing internet service to underserved communities through high-speed community Wi-Fi zones.

According to AMHA officials, the Wi-Fi Zones will give residents in AMHA public housing full access to quality wireless internet service in their residential units. Previously, residents could access free Wi-Fi in common areas only.
